Theresa May – good news for construction?

The swift appointment of Theresa May as Prime Minister has allowed the UK to experience a much needed reduction in the uncertainty created by Brexit, compared to a potential long drawn out election process, which would only add to it. The new cabinet Theresa May has undertaken a considerable reshuffle of the cabinet, with new ministers for sectors that are important to Whitescape: education and business, whilst Jeremy Hunt still remains as health secretary. Their policies and the way they want to take their sectors forward could have an effect on our industry. Whitescape is [...]

New Eton rooms pay back in one year

Eton College is one of the UK’s leading independent schools, with around 1300 pupils, all full boarders. Westbury House is a home from home to around 50 boys, each having his own study-bedroom as a private space. Whitescape converted the loft of the Grade-II listed building to create five new rooms, and also built an extension. The additional fees generated by these rooms covered the project investment in just one year. Complete in 10 weeks The project had to be completed from start to finish in the ten-week summer holiday, while the building was unoccupied. There [...]

Delivering projects in the summer break

Many of Whitescape’s school projects are timed so that work is started and completed within summer holiday periods. Some of these projects are relatively small-scale works to staff and student accommodation, but others involve extensive remodelling and reconstruction of core areas. Our success in delivering time-critical projects comes from Whitescape’s meticulous attention to strategic planning and to the vital preconstruction stage. This ensures that every project ‘hits the ground running’, the right resources are in place for every phase, and nothing is overlooked. Some examples of how we can do it in just six weeks At Thameside [...]

Managing ‘live site’ alterations

The Endoscopy Suite at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, provides facilities for patients who require planned, urgent or emergency endoscopy and interventional radiological procedures. Whitescape reconfigured the unit to comply with Joint Advisory Group accreditation, a ‘badge’ of quality for patients and commissioners. An environment of privacy and respect Endoscopy procedures are usually performed on an outpatient basis. Patients, carers and visitors should expect the best possible care and experience in what can be a difficult and stressful 60 minutes or so. This project was designed to increase patient privacy from changing room to [...]

Transforming the heart of the hospice

Princess Alice Hospice provides in-patient, day patient and at-home palliative care across Surrey, south west London and Middlesex. Whitescape was chosen to refurbish and extend the communal areas of the hospice, including reception, café and dining room. A place that says ‘we care’ Whitescape understood that these facilities are an important element of the care and support offered to patients and their loved ones. We proposed, beyond the initial brief, a striking new extension that would enable us to re-envisage the reception, seating and catering areas as a beautiful, flexible series of spaces that would [...]

New homes on a brownfield site

Hampton Hill is a ‘suburban village’ in southwest London, close to the Thames, the Royal Parks and historic Hampton Court. The High Street is a vibrant mix of local traders, businesses and residential properties. When a site to the rear of buildings on the High Street became available, it was a rare opportunity to develop a group of four high-end, three-bedroom traditional town houses at the heart of this sought-after community. Challenges and solutions For the ground conditions, the engineer proposed 44 no 300mm diameter piles, bored to depths of up to 15m. The confined [...]
