Hampton Hill is a ‘suburban village’ in southwest London, close to the Thames, the Royal Parks and historic Hampton Court. The High Street is a vibrant mix of local traders, businesses and residential properties. When a site to the rear of buildings on the High Street became available, it was a rare opportunity to develop a group of four high-end, three-bedroom traditional town houses at the heart of this sought-after community.

Challenges and solutions

For the ground conditions, the engineer proposed 44 no 300mm diameter piles, bored to depths of up to 15m. The confined site and extremely narrow entrance needed some thought to take a piling machine of the required size. Whitescape sourced and appointed a specialist piling contractor who changed to the smallest rig possible, which still left only millimetres either side of the site entrance. We monitored traffic flow in the weeks before the rig arrived, to determine the least congested times to take delivery.

Delivering value

Whitescape has demonstrated a consistently customer-focused, value-for-money approach across our residential portfolio, from social housing and affordable homes to private sector dwellings and small developments. The client for this project was also aware of our technical and management skills in other construction sectors. Given the brownfield site and difficult access, we have applied our intelligence and expertise to ensure that the potential is optimised, the budget controlled, and the expected margins on the £4m collective sale value will be realised.
